Historic Fuller Lodge
Welcome to Los Alamos, the Secret City hidden in the mountains of Northern New Mexico, the birthplace of the atomic bomb, the home of cougars, elk and bears, and a city of nearly 9,000 residents.
Fuller Lodge was the main building of a private ranch school for teen boys from 1917 until 1943. In late 1942, the building and surrounding area was purchased by the US Army for the Manhattan Project, and eventually turned into Los Alamos National Laboratory and the county of Los Alamos. Today, the Lodge is home to the Fuller Lodge Art Center, with many additional areas available for special events or just visiting.
The Fuller Lodge Art Center
The Fuller Lodge Art Center, nestled in the heart of downtown Los Alamos, is a multi-faceted hub for art and artists in the community. The Art Center was formed in 1977, branching off from the Los Alamos Arts Council and the Pajarito Art League. In July of 2010, Ken Nebel took over directorship and helped shape the Art Center into what it is today. Located in a wing of the historic Fuller Lodge, FLAC embraces its history but also looks forward to the future. With 2017's exhibit schedule already set and a plethora of upcoming art classes for kids and adults, we're bringing the future to Los Alamos right now.
Representing over 100 local and regional artists in the Gallery Gift Shop, we provide a venue for artists who sell their handmade work. In our main exhibit space, we host 9 to 10 themed shows per year that are open to artists of all skills levels from all over the world. We also provide a smaller show space in our Portal Gallery for artists, either established or up-and-coming, to have their own solo shows. In all of these spaces throughout the Art Center, we welcome the public at no cost to come through and find inspiration in the pieces that are on display.
While we strive to inspire the artists within all of you, we also want to reach out and teach the gift of art to our future generations. Therefore, we offer Wednesday afternoon art classes for 1st through 6th graders, Monday morning art sessions for 4 to 6 year olds, and 7 weeks of Art Camp during the Summers. For the adults, we offer classes during the Spring and Fall semesters ranging from Watercolor to Welding, Clay to Carving, Glass to Graphite, and more. For those who don't want to commit to a course, we also offer ongoing art groups such as Life Drawing, Photo Club, the Adobe Users Group, and Clay Club.
With all of the activities going on inside the Art Center, we also host two annual Arts & Crafts Fairs as well. Our first fair of the year coincides with the Los Alamos County Fair and Rodeo and is held on the lawn of the picturesque Fuller Lodge. For this fair, around 100 juried artisans display their handcrafted work in a field of white tents as the County Parade floats down Central Ave. Our Fall fair is an indoor venue with around 65 artists selling to those who have started their holiday shopping early.
This Friday, the Fuller Lodge Art Center will be unveiling our annual Affordable Arts show! Thirty new artists were juried in to show off their unique, handcrafted gift items to Art Center visitors over the holidays. This show, which takes place between November 25 and January 7, transforms the gallery into a magical, Winter wonderland! Be sure to join us for our GREEN Friday opening on November 25th and Small Business Saturday on November 26th. Then, of course, we'll have our Holiday Open House in conjunction with the Los Alamos Light Parade on December 3. On this day, the Art Center will be open until 6pm and will be serving cookies and cider all day long.
Whether you're buying presents for loved ones for the holidays, decorating your homes, thanking your teachers, saying 'goodbye' to a co-worker, giving a house warming gift, or just need a card, the Fuller Lodge Art Center can fulfill all of your shopping list needs. Come in for some retail therapy anytime during our business hours which are Monday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm. We'll also be open from 12pm to 4pm on Sundays, November 27 through December 18. We're located at 2132 Central Ave. in Los Alamos. Give us a call at (505) 662-1635. You can also check us out on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter!
