WATERCOLOR BASICS FOR BEGINNERS: Techniques            Instructor: Susanne Harrison
Enjoy a fun, and non-intimidating approach to watercolor painting. This class will focus on applying paint to paper using dry brush and wet into wet techniques.  Learn to soften edges, lift color, sponge, splatter and use salt to create texture in your paintings.  Basic watercolor materials: #8 round and 1 inch flat brushes are recommended (but any size you have will do), 140lb. watercolor paper, a palette, paper towels, a container for water and tube paints.  If you need material’s, they will be available to use during class for a $15 fee.  *Bring a bag lunch.

LIVING IN A MATERIAL WORLD                        Instructor: Ken Nebel
All artistic media have their own touch and feel.  Take on a world of different media in this day long workshop.  We’ll meet at Village Arts at 216 DP Road for an immersive experience in both wet and dry media.  The goal in this workshop is the journey, not a finished product, but it should leave you to a jumping off point for your creative endeavors!

PORTRAITURE IN PASTELS                         Instructor: Susan Roden
The main focus of “Portraiture in Pastels” is how-to execute a pastel portrait coupled with handling the pastel medium in a layered application. The one-day session will have participants learn the fundamentals of the medium through hands-on exercises and progress to a finished pastel portrait to take home.

KILN FIRED ENAMELING: Mandalas (16 yrs. - Adults)            Instructor: Cande Toner
In this class, we will melt enamel (glass) on copper blanks.  Learn how to properly prepare the copper for enameling through the finished product. We will be making an enamel Mandala suitable for a small frame or pendant.

FIELD TRIP: GLASS PAPERWEIGHT EXPERIENCE at LIQUID LIGHT GLASS (12 yrs.- Adults)
Get a hands-on experience in the art of paperweight making. These experiences are quick introductions to creating beautiful paperweights. They are fun and no experience required. They make wonderful gifts for loved ones or just treat yourself. The pieces you create will be ready for pick-up one to two days after your event or can be shipped to you.

SIMPLE WIRE WRAP RINGS (Beginner - Teens & Adults)         Instructor: Molly Hodosko
Create 3 simple wire wrapped rings of any size and multiple styles using a single metal wire with a bead or beads.  Supply fee includes various beads and different color craft wire.  Various base metal and stone beads available at an additional fee.

ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, DRAW                    Instructor: Ken Nebel
Take up your pencils, pens, and charcoal and explore basic drawing techniques through a variety of exercises designed to retrain the eye.  Work from photos, still life, and life to describe the world around you.

We’ll go beyond the basics…such as making mugs, goblets, and teapots.  Requests and demos will determine our direction. Students have access to the studio outside of class hours (M-Sat., 10am-4pm), if not in use.  Please bring an apron/old shirt, small towel, and favorite clay tools.

This introductory oil painting class focuses on the fundamentals of oil paint materials and applications. Explore paint mixing and paint blending for simple compositions on canvas surfaces. Address three successful styles of paint application - glazing, blending, and layering. Students are encouraged to create and bring small sketches, photographs, or other imagery as inspiration for their exercises.

KUMOMI:  Finding Meaning in Randomness                  Instructor: Britton Donharl
Come join us for a relaxing evening mixing and painting color and drawing mindful doodles! Kumomi is a creative process that combines the randomness of spontaneous painting with the control of mindful drawing as a meditative art form. You don’t need to be artistic to receive the benefits of Kumomi.  The goal is not necessarily to create an art masterpiece but to enjoy the creative process, relax the body and open the mind. Kumomi is the combination of Japanese characters for “cloud” and “to see” so it essentially means, “cloud gazing.”- Karen Elaine, Artist and Developer of the Kumomi Process.

FANCY WIRE WRAPPED STONE PENDANT (Intermediate - Teens & Adults)     Instructor: Molly Hodosko
Create a fancy wire wrapped stone pendant using a single metal wire.  Supply fee includes base metal.  Stones must be a certain shape and stones of various size and quality will be available starting $10 and up.  Sterling silver wire will also be available at an additional fee.

SPLASH COLOR WORKSHOP    2-DAY WEEKEND WORKSHOP        Instructor: Ming Franz
Join Ming Franz (International Artist Magazine’s recent grand prize winner), for Splash Color workshop, starting from ancient Black and White splash to marbling splash to abstract splash, splash on mulberry paper using liquid watercolor, acrylic and Asian ink.  The foundation of this painting process is based on principles originating in Tang Dynasty China with a technique known as Po Mo.  Essentially the artist freely “splashes” liquid color onto stacks of dampened sheets of mulberry paper. After the wet sheets are left to dry for several hours, they are separated so the real magic can begin: discovering if the resulting dried sheets are abstracts able to stand on their own, or if they can be enhanced with more paint, whatever the imagination sees in the heart of the work.
MATERIALS (Ming can supply the following for $45.00): Ma “Mulberry” rice paper 2 sheets, size  56 x 27,  Msa paper 2 sheets size 18 x 22 (Student may purchase more sheet from instructor.), Asian black ink.( Sumi-e Ink), liquid primary transparent watercolors or Liquid Acrylic (yellow, red, blue, and white liquid watercolor), Simi opaque watercolor ( Marie’s Chinese Watercolor), backing boards (corrugated plastic boards), salt, liquid detergent, alcohol, and Saran Wrap.
STUDENTS NEED TO BRING: Six or more clear small plastic cups and plastic spoons, one roll of masking tape, one roll of paper towel, one spray bottle, a water container and a color mixing palette, and acrylic or oil brushes round 4, 6, Flat 6, wash brush.

WET & WORKABLE WATERCOLOR: 2-Day Flowers Workshop         Instructor:  Jeanne Hyland
Start your paintings with loose color washes, mingling, spatter and other intuitive processes or blocking in large shapes and values and lift or sculpt out of it enabling rich, dimensional, close-in flower portraits. Paint your light values back in. Learn how to manage moisture in your brush, paint & paper and balance it with appropriate timing on wet, moist & dry paper. It will take the hurry out our watercolor by keeping the painting “workable” for hours to lift, glaze or layer. You can easily get loose, flowing color, soft edges as well as crisp details.

This one-day class will cover the fundamentals of pastels while executing two landscapes in miniature format. Emphasis will be placed upon two types of application, with observance of contrasting colors, positive / negative shapes and the effects of varied strokes. The session will refine technical skills, as well as increase one’s creativity.

BLOCK CUTTING: Printmaking                                  Instructor:  Susanne Harrison
Use an image provided at class or sketch your own simple design.  We will transfer the design to the linoleum, gauge and cut and gradually print in multiple colors.  Images can be used for greeting cards or framed and hung on your wall.
*Materials include: 4x5 Linoleum Sheets, Carbon Paper, Card Stock Paper, 8x12 Glass or Plexiglas, Brayer, Lino Cutters, Handles and Linozips.   If you need material’s, they will be available to use during class for a $15 fee.

LANDSCAPES WITH MANY MEDIUMS ON PAPER             Instructor: Karen Trythall
Create compelling landscape compositions in many mediums. Work with linear pencil, ink and watercolor.  Move to pencil shading, eraser drawing, charcoals, chalk pastels, oil pastels and acrylic painting on paper. Students are encouraged to create and bring small sketches, photographs, or other imagery as inspiration for their exercises. Materials to bring: 2 heavy weight sketch books with cotton paper: one small and one large, gum eraser (the kind that looks like a caramel not the grey kind that can be shaped into tiny sculptures)

INTRODUCTION TO SCRATCHBOARD (Adults & Teens)            Instructor: Heather Ward
Come play with knives.  In this introductory class on Scratchboard, we will cover pre-made boards and the many tools and techniques to create intricate drawings. Topics include working white-on-black, the variety of tools and the effects they create, fixing mistakes, adding color, and preserving a finished piece.
*Bring a 5”x7” black and white photo to work from, or choose from several available.

ADVANCED SCRATCHBOARD                                               Instructor: Heather Ward
Learn advanced techniques of scratchboard art, a great sequel to the beginners’ class. Topics include preparing reference images, working in layers, use of airbrush and friskets working on large and miniature boards, cutting and repairing boards, and advanced tool and color techniques.
*Bring an 8”x10” black and white photo to work from, or choose from several available.  *Class materials fee is optional if you have materials from the intro class.  Boards will be extra ($10 for 8"x10").

CLASS POLICIES:

Registration: You can call the Fuller Lodge Art Center at (505) 662-1635 to register for any class or you can stop in anytime during our business hours which are Monday through Saturday, from 10am to 4pm.

Class Minimum: Early registration is highly recommended. Every class needs a minimum of 4 students. If the class does not meet that requirement within three days of its scheduled start date, the class will be cancelled.

Payment: Payment is expected in full upon registration. If you fail to pay when signing up, we cannot guarantee your seat in the class.

Class Cancellation: If a class has been cancelled, all students will receive a full refund.

Personal Cancellation:  If you call to cancel no later than one week prior to the start of class, the Fuller Lodge Art Center will reimburse you your registration fee, less $10. For any cancellations made during the week the class is scheduled (Less than 7 days prior), we cannot offer a refund.

Annual Class Exhibit: All students are encouraged to enter their artwork into our annual class show which takes place at the beginning of each year. There is no fee to participate. You can decide which pieces you would like to have on display and you can choose to sell it or mark it as Not For Sale. You do need to fill out the application (just so we know what's coming in for the exhibit) which can be found in our Calls for Artists on the Home Page as well as under the "Create" tab under Adult Classes.
